Râma is the bee that sucks the honey of devotion from the lotus of the heart. The bee divides the petals of the flower on which it rests, but Râma increases its beauty and fragrance. He is like the Sun, which with its rays attracts the water, turning it into clouds and then returns it in the form of rain to quench the thirst of the earth. Râma, the mystical and powerful sound, comes from the navel, rises up to the tongue and dances cheerfully on it.
The declaration of the Veda, Tat tvam asi, “That you are”, is enclosed in the word Râma, which consists of three sounds: ra, â and ma. Of these, “ra” is the symbol of tat (That, Brahman, God); “ma” is the symbol of tvam (you, the jîvi, the individual), and the “â” that unites the two is the symbol of their identity. The word Râma also has a numerical meaning: “ra” counts as 2, “â” counts as 0, and “ma” counts as 5; therefore, the equivalent sum is 7, an auspicious number. We have the 7 svara (notes) of music and the 7 Heavenly Sages; moreover, reciting Râma continuously for 7 days is considered particularly beneficial. Each act and actor in the story attract the reader’s attention and stay impressed in his memory because the allegory personally concerns each one of us.
